At a recent Congress rally at Gurdaspur, Randhawa had alleged that Congress supporters were being implicated in false corruption cases at the behest of Punjab speaker Nirmal Singh Kahlon and local MLA from Fatehgarh Churian.
However, at a SAD rally addressed by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal here on December 31, 2007, Kahlon said that irregularities in panchayat funds and list of pensioners will be reviewed to check frauds.
While the departmental probe had detected 54 persons who availed old age pension by forging documents during the previous regime, the list was sent to Gurdaspur deputy commissioner Gurkirat Kirpal Singh who sent the same to area police for action against the guilty.
Batala police chief, SSP, RN Dhoke told The Times of India on Thursday that while the Dera Baba Nanak DSP Mohan Lal,
in his probe, had found that 54 beneficiaries had forged papers to get old age pension, 17 residents of Shahpur Goraya village of Fateh Garh Churian were arrested on Thursday.
Hunt was on for other accused, who were absconding, Dhoke said.
Police had booked them under sections 420 and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, he said.
